Building Community Through Connections Program at PAFN

What happens when you combine gaming, a welcoming community, and the desire to create inclusive spaces? The Connections Valiant program run by Neurovaliant at the Pacific Autism Family Network (PAFN) is the answer. Every third Thursday of the month, participants gather at the PAFN Richmond centre to bond over popular games like Super Smash Bros, Crash Team Racing, and a range of titles on Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch—all made possible through generous donor support.

The program, which has been running since 2017, was born from the desire to create a space where neurodiverse individuals, like Lucas, could feel truly comfortable. Diagnosed with autism at six, Lucas often found it difficult to fit into other programs. So, in partnership with PAFN, he decided to start something new - a program designed for teenagers and young adults who, like him, wanted a space to connect, share their passions, and have fun.

Lucas’s mom beams with pride seeing the program thrive. It's grown to include 20 members who not only game together but have become friends outside the program, going to sporting events, movies, and building lifelong connections. "Inside jokes are always flying around," Lucas says, describing the community ambiance.

For anyone considering joining the Connections Valiant program, Lucas has one piece of advice: "Give it a shot. It never hurts to try. This is a welcoming space by the community, for the community. Everyone and their unique hobbies are celebrated, ensuring that everyone feels valued and included – plus we have pizza complementary of Fresh Slice Saba Road!”

For the program’s participants, having an inclusive space where they can connect with their peers means everything. It's not just about the games; it's about belonging. "You can’t outgrow autism, but you can grow with the community," Lucas explains.

“For the longest time, I’ve always felt like I have had to put on a face, if you will, to fit in. Connections Valiant has from the start been a place where I don’t have to worry about any of that and just be fully myself, regardless of judgement or opinion,” one of the program members explains. Another member shares their experience, “It means the world to me to have those who understand me hang out every month. I have accepted and released myself immensely since starting this program!”

Programs like Connections Valiant rely on the generosity of the community. For those considering a donation to PAFN, Lucas and his peers’ express deep gratitude. "Thank you for helping us grow this program," Lucas says. "There’s often talk about supporting younger children, but the transition into teenage years and young adulthood often lacks the same level of support. Programs like Connections Valiant bridge that gap." For those who have already contributed, the impact is felt deeply by the participants. "It means the world to us to have this space, where we can just be ourselves, connect with others, and blossom," Lucas adds.
