Neurovaliant: A Place Where Friendship and Inclusion Thrive

When Lucas founded his first club at Pacific Autism Family Network, he had a clear goal: to create a space where neurodivergent teens and adults could meet, form friendships, and feel accepted for who they are.

Connections Valiant is that space, a social club where participants can make new friends, play games, and share pizza together in a safe and inclusive environment.

For Lucas, Connections Valiant is more than just a club. It is a passion project and a response to a real need in the community.

“This was built from the ground up, with autistic-led leadership from the start,” Lucas explained. “It proves that we need in-person recreation for teens and adults now more than ever.”

For participants like Jacob, Connections Valiant has been transformative, offering not just activities but a genuine sense of belonging.

“Being part of Connections means having a supportive community where I feel accepted and valued. Over the past three years, I’ve built strong friendships that really matter to me,” Jacob said.

Jacob first heard about the program through friends who were already participating. He was drawn to a space where he could be himself while joining fun activities and meeting new people.

“Some of my favourite memories involve playing video games together, meeting new people, and just enjoying pizza as a group,” Jacob explained. “Those moments show how welcoming and enjoyable the group can be.”

Zach, another participant, has found the program equally rewarding, highlighting the independence and friendships he has gained.

“Being a part of Connections introduced me to people that are now very good friends… I found a group of people who accept me,” Zach said.

As PAFN celebrates its 10th anniversary, Lucas reflects on the lasting impact of Connections Valiant and its role in the wider community.

“Connections as a whole is the longest-tenured club in PAFN’s program listing… I couldn’t be prouder of Connections Valiant and the amazing participants who attend,” Lucas said.

For those thinking about joining, the message is clear from Jacob.

“Joining Connections could end up being one of the best decisions they make,” Jacob said.

Beyond Connections Valiant, Lucas’s vision extends through Neurovaliant, the broader initiative that supports multiple programs for neurodivergent individuals to connect, create, and thrive.

His advocacy also reaches the wider community through Autism Acceptance Night jersey designs, public speaking on accessibility and representation, and ensuring autistic voices are heard in local initiatives.

Through games, shared meals, and community, both Connections Valiant and Neurovaliant show how inclusive programs can create meaningful and lasting impact for neurodivergent individuals.
