Beyond the Finish Line: John Hallam’s Ironman Journey for PAFN

For John Hallam, endurance sports have always been about pushing beyond what he thought was possible. What began with a spontaneous marathon in university evolved into a love for endurance races, leading John to complete marathons in medieval armour and take on a 1,700-kilometre cycling journey across the UK.

Now, John is preparing to take on his biggest challenge yet: his first IRONMAN race, taking place October 18th in Sacramento. The race consists of a 3.8-kilometre swim, 180-kilometre bike and 42.2-kilometre marathon.

But for John, the challenge is about more than crossing a finish line. It is an opportunity to raise funds and awareness or a cause that matters to him.

“I’ve always believed that if I’m going to challenge myself, I have an opportunity to make that challenge mean something for others too,” John said.

Why PAFN?

John first learned about Pacific Autism Family Network through the YVR for Kids Golf Tournament. After speaking with the PAFN team and learning more about the organization’s work across B.C., he felt a strong connection to its mission.

“I believe families should not have to navigate complicated systems, find resources or overcome challenges on their own,” he said. “For me, supporting PAFN is one small way of helping build a more inclusive community where Autistic individuals and their families feel supported, understood and connected.”

A challenge with a purpose

Completing an Ironman has been a lifelong goal for John, and he says it will be the biggest physical and mental challenge he has taken on to date. The journey has already required countless hours of training, early mornings and plenty of moments where he has had to push through fatigue and doubt.

John also hopes the experience will be a lesson for his two boys, showing them that difficult circumstances do not have to define what a person is capable of achieving.

“I want them to understand that sometimes the most worthwhile achievements are the ones that initially seem impossible.”

Beyond the finish line

John hopes his fundraising will help PAFN continue providing meaningful support, resources and opportunities for Autistic individuals and their families across B.C. He also hopes the journey will help raise awareness and introduce more people to the work PAFN does in communities across the province.

“Every donation represents more than a dollar raised. It represents an opportunity to help someone access information, support, resources or a connection that could make a meaningful difference in their life.”

As he looks ahead to race day, John is especially excited for the moment he crosses the finish line and hears the words every Ironman athlete works toward: “John Hallam, you are an Ironman.” And once that moment arrives, he plans to celebrate in true John fashion. After marking past races with cartwheels, football celebrations and breakdancing, he has one final move planned for his first Ironman: the worm.

But behind that moment will be months of determination, sacrifice and hard work, all supporting a purpose far greater than just the race itself.

“The finish line will mark the end of the race, but it will also represent everything that happened to get me there.”
