Brewing Confidence and Inclusion at Paper Planes Café
In the bustling corridors of Vancouver International Airport's domestic arrivals terminal, nestled on level two, lies a hidden gem: Paper Planes Café. But what makes this café truly special isn't just its artisanal coffee or delectable treats—it's the team behind the counter, a team that embodies diversity, inclusion, and resilience. And at the heart of this team is TJ, a former participant of Employment Works and now a shining member of the Paper Planes family.
TJ's journey is one of inspiration and growth. From his beginnings as an Employment Works participant, he has blossomed into a confident and skilled member of the workforce. His role at Paper Planes Café has not only provided him with invaluable workplace experience but has also allowed him to cultivate essential skills such as teamwork and communication.
"My role at the cafe has helped me get familiar with the workplace, be a team player and gain comfort in talking to people,"
TJ shares with a smile.
But TJ's talents and interests extend far beyond the coffee counter. When he's not brewing up a fresh cup of coffee or serving customers with a warm smile, you can find him indulging in his passion for drawing, honing his culinary skills, or exploring the great outdoors.
TJ's enthusiasm for his work and dedication to personal growth have not gone unnoticed. He encourages people to visit Paper Planes Café, not just for the delicious treats, but also to support the neurodiverse staff as they continue to improve their skill sets and carve out their places in the workforce.
"TJ has gained a great deal of confidence and skills. As parents, nothing makes us happier than to see our children healthy and successful, so a big thank you to PAFN, the Paper Planes Cafe, YVR and all the people that make this possible,"
express Vincent and Michelle, TJ's parents.
TJ's story serves as a reminder of the transformative power of inclusion and support. Through opportunities like those provided by Paper Planes Café and organizations like the Pacific Autism Family Network (PAFN), individuals like TJ are not just finding employment—they're finding purpose, belonging, and the chance to thrive.
